The repetition in your editorial of all the reprehensible acts committed by the LTTE misses the main point of the vigil and for my attendance at the event: to urge Canadian sympathizers of both parties to this conflict to pressure those in their homeland to resume the peace negotiations, so that increased violence and more deaths in that troubled country can be avoided.

Mr. Thamilselvan's death casts doubt on the Sri Lankan government's commitment to peace. Yet its conflict with the Tamil Tigers will not be resolved through military force. Unfortunately, the National Post's editorial ignored this fact.

If Flaherty were serious about fighting poverty, he could have made a real difference in improving the lives of the 5.3 million Canadians who live at the margins of this rich country by creating a reasonable earnings supplement for the working poor and by raising by 50 per cent the National Child Benefit Supplement, which is paid to low-income parents.
